EAPs: Good or Bad?

While working at my internship I was assigned to do some research on EAPs (employee assistance program) to see whether they are beneficial or not. An EAP program is an employee benefits program that employers can set up to help employees deal with personal or work related issues. EAPs were first started in the 1940s to help employees who were having work performance problems due to personal issues. Since then, EAPs have evolved to help employees with much more than work performance issues such as, depression, stress, anxiety, addictions, anger, marital or relationship issues, grief and loss, care giving, elder care, coping with change, workplace issues, and self-improvement to name a few.

Having this option available for employees is good for them and for the employer. When people are able to talk about their problem and fix them, their work performance will increase and turnover will decrease. EAPs are also very Continue Reading »

HR Professionals!

Hey everyone. For one of my management classes, we were asked to interview people in our field, mine being HR, and ask some questions about how they got there, any advice they might have, or if they could help me develop a career network. If you are an HR professional, could you please comment back on this with your responses to my few questions. If you wouldn’t mind leaving your name, job title, and maybe even where you work if you can. Thank you all for your help!

1. How did you start in your HR career? What were some of the challenges you faced coming into this profession?

2. What advice would you give a fresh college graduate going into the HR field to help them succeed?

3.  In your experience, what was the most important thing you learned that has helped you succeed in your career?

Thanks again! I appreciate your input and feedback!

In today’s economy, many people are unemployed. But there are plenty of things you can do to stay in touch with the business world and prepare yourself for re-entry. Here are 5 tips on how to stay in touch with the business world while unemployed.

1. Get on social networks. Today, technology is one of the leading ways people stay connected. Social media is a great way for professionals to stay in touch and get connected. I recommend you create a Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter page. It is also a good idea to start a blog about your profession. Doing these things will allow you to connect with professionals in your field all over the world and possibly help you in your job search.

2. Volunteer in your community. Volunteering is a great way to stay in touch and make connections. Most communities have volunteer organizations that you can join. I personally am involved in Rotaract (part of Rotary International) and I have made many connections through it. This organization has allowed me to meet hundreds of people in my profession. It has also been a great networking tool.

I know it has been awhile since my last post, but things have been crazy! Last week was the start of my last semester of college. It has been a rough but amazing ride. Today was the first day at my internship, and I can already tell it is going to be great! It has only been one day and I have already learned so much! I learned how to go through the application process, filling out OSHA logs, and a little bit about workers comp. I am so excited to actually be putting my HR knowledge into action and getting real world experience. I know that this is going to be the best learning experience I can have and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me!

I will probably only be able to blog about once or twice a week, but hopefully I will find time and be able to share my internship experiences with you as I go.

If you have any tips or advice on how to make the best out of my internship, they are always welcome 🙂

With today’s economy and many other things happening all over the world, it is important for your business to be able to adapt to change. The economy has forced many companies out of business and many people to lose their jobs. If you want your company to succeed, it is important to be able to except and change to what is necessary. Having an adaptive culture and work environment also makes the work day better. It is nice to know that you wont be doing the same thing everyday for as long as you work there, but there may be a reason to change and you get to do something else.

Some people however do not like change. They like the way things are and they do not want to change. Here is a good article for managers on Managing Change in the Workplace. It gives you tips on how to prepare yourself and your employees for change.

I believe it is very important to be able to adapt to change. Nothing is going to be the same forever, so it is a good idea to start preparing yourself now. Who knows what the future holds for us!

I was looking through all my old photos of when I studied abroad in Italy this summer and it got me thinking of all the reasons everyone should travel abroad at least once in their life. So I decided to change it up a bit and write my thought about why it is important to study/travel abroad.

This past summer I studied abroad through USAC and spent the first part of the summer living in Torino, Italy. I took two classes, intro to Italian and a PR class. I had a pretty easy schedule which left me plenty of free time to wonder around. Almost every weekend we (friends I had made there) traveled to all kinds of places including; Nice (France), Venice, Verona, Genova, Santa Margherita, Portofino, Pisa, and Ireland! Being able to travel around, see new places and meet new people changed my life. Everything I saw had amazing history behind it and there was always a story to be told. It was mind blowing when you would walk up to a building and it seemed like it wasn’t too old when you suddenly see ruins coming out of it! They would build around the old ruins to keep them standing.

When I got to Italy, the only word I knew was ciao, which is not much when your going to live there. I was very nervous because I was flying by myself to a foreign country and I couldn’t speak the language. The first 2 days there I questioned what I was doing and I wanted to go home. After that however, my life started to change and I loved being there. I learned enough Italian through my class to get around and I was even having small conversations with Italians! It did help that my two roommates were almost fluent in Italian ;). I had the best month of my life studying abroad and meeting people that will be my life long friends, but my journey wasn’t over then.

After school ended my mom flew  out to Torino to meet me. We had always wanted to go to Europe, but we kept putting it off and I didn’t think we would ever go. When I decided I wanted to study abroad, I knew this would be our time and my mom finally had her excuse to go. We had the best time together. We went all along the coast of France to Monte Continue Reading »

I believe that goal setting is very important in our day-to-day lives. Setting goals allows you to work towards something so you are not doing the same thing over and over again. Maybe your goal is your motivation? I set many goals for myself. My most resent goal (and one of my new year resolutions) was to get an HR internship for my last semester of college. I am very happy and excited to say that I completed my goal! On Tuesday, I was offered an internship at a local HR firm. It is such a great feeling of accomplishment when you reach your goals. My next goal is get good grades in school and work hard and learn as much as I can from my internship.

It is important to set high goals for yourself as long as they are realistic. If you can not swim, you probably don’t want to set a goal to swim across Lake Tahoe, but maybe your goal could be to learn how to swim. And perhaps in time and with lots of practice you could eventually set a goal swim across the lake. It is also important to set short and long term goals, as well as a timeline for those goals. If your goal is to get a job, you probably want to complete this as soon as possible so it will be your short term goal and you give yourself a month. This means you have to work hard and never give up until you complete your goal in your set timeline. If your goal is to get promoted, this might be a long term goal, and you give yourself a year or two to complete it. Setting goals is very important because it gives you something to work for. Even if it is silly, if you say it is a goal, then it will motivate you to complete it.

Here are some helpful tips on goal setting. You can have as many goals as you want, but never give up on them! What are some of your goals?
